The Guinardó Beat is both a narrative story and a parable of deep moral and socio-political meaning. For a few hours, an old police inspector, just about to retire, and an almost adolescent girl, haunted by poverty and prostitution, make the rounds of a Barcelona islum in a strange pilgrimage: the girls has to identify the body of a delinquent who is thought o bem the man who once raped her. It is the smae day when news of the end of the Second World War is made public in Spain. As the day goes by, the reader witnesses this descent into the dusty, miserable, threatened and oppressed lives of the people of Guinardó, where, in spite of everything, the will to servive beats on with vital energy.
